The beauty of Gallina Canyon is best seen on foot; much of the canyon can be experienced from the canyon floor by well-prepared hikers with good health. For the more spectacular views, experienced hikers may wish to see the canyon from a height.
One of the more grand panoramic views is from the ruins of the ancient Gallina Culture's Towers ("Torreones"). The hike from Wilderness Jacal to the ruins and back is about five miles, and can take from four to six hours round-trip; from Wilderness Casita and back the hike is about thirteen miles, and will take all day. The hike's host, David, is knowledgeable about the Gallina Culture and he will take you to the ruins and answer questions you may have. The hike to the ruins without a guide is prohibited. Requirements you must have for the guided hike are: 1) Sturdy hiking boots. 2) A hat or other form of head covering. 3) Drinking water. 4) Long pants to protect your legs. Also you will need to bring a lunch, sun screen, and a shirt with long sleeves. You may also wish to bring a camera. If you are interested in the hike during your stay at Wilderness Casita or Wilderness Jacal, please let us know upon your arrival. The fee for the guided hike is $80 from Wilderness Jacal, and $100 from Wilderness Casita. |
